Farm murders destroy our culture – Steve Hofmeyr

Afrikaans activist/singer Steve Hofmeyr: with every murdered farmer, another bit of our Afrikaans history gets lost forever:

April 6 2012 - Afrikaans artist Steve Hofmeyr's 'Haloda" concerts always draw sell-out crowds – many poor Afrikaners are known to save for months to attend one of his low-cost concerts. He appears with his son Armand Hofmeyr and singer Willem Botha. At his latest performance at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees yesterday, he reminisced about the many hitsongs from his entire career, writes Landbouweekblad journalist Lucille Botha this week.

Just before he sang 'Ons sal dit oorleef'... (We will survive it) - in which the powerful voice of murdered Boer-leader Eugene Terre'Blanche is heard  (video above), Hofmeyr held a moving, deeply emotional speech about the impact of the farm-murders on his nation.

"Every time a Boer is murdered and before the next Wednesday another one will be killed, something will die inside you: you lose a little bit of your language, a little bit of your culture, a little bit of your religion, a little bit of your identity,' he told his spellbound audience. "Every time a Boer gets murdered, you lose the privilege of another Van der Merwe joke, the advantage of a dessert, you say goodbye to a Hertzog-cookie, you say goodby to the FAK, you lose a little bit of your history."

Hofmeyr responds personally to his tens of thousands of Tweet-members each day while travelling long distances between concerts with his family by car

Then he gave the audience a chance to ask him questions: Hofmeyr has tens of thousands of Tweet-members, and sends out hundreds of personal Tweet-replies to them each day. Such personal, direct interaction with his supporters is unprecedented for any South African artist. He also often visits disabled Afrikaans children to give them encouragement, and holds benefit concerts to raise cash for their care and treatment.

One concert-goer asked whether he'd ever had a braai with Julius Malema. He replied: "No I never got around to him. We don't have the biggest love-relation in the world. But we don't have to do much now,  we can just stand back and watch him disappear,' he commented. 5 April 2012  http://www.landbou.com/node/60583
